Net Zero Energy is a design concept for buildings that are to use no more energy than they generate on-site through renewable sources. The concept requires that a building's energy use must be evaluated and then reduced to the lowest level possible; hence, the term Net Zero. Natural ventilation is a logical choice to reduce energy loads, but rarely practical or possible. Consequently, many owners are adopting a hybrid system to achieve Net Zero, using a mix of mechanical and natural ventilation called mixed mode ventilation.

In this presentation, Tim Wentz will cover some potential strategies and technologies, such as mixed mode ventilation, that can be used to achieve a Net Zero Energy design in buildings. Tim will also present potential obstacles that design teams can encounter as part of the process.
