Last month we reported that the potential for green building could reach $96 billion by 2013. But who will be driving the demand for efficient construction?

For the answer we looked to the latest AIA research. The 2008 Green Index shows that customers remain the leading force behind green building, with 66% of surveyed architects citing "client demand" as the primary influence on their practice of green building.

Architects believe, according to the report, that the primary reasons clients are asking for green buildings are
  • Reduced operating costs (60%)
  • Marketing (52%)
  • Market demand (21%, up from 10 percent in the 2007 survey)
